National Solid Waste Management
Authority School Outreach Programme

St. John's, Antigua

On Tuesday 19th June 2007 the Environmental Services Department within the National Solid Waste Management Authority was invited to the Antigua Grammar School to host a training session for the students of forms 1 and 2. In continuing its mandate to ensure continuity of the School's Outreach Program, the students were educated on topics such as illegal dumping, pollution of the environment, littering and its effect on environmental, the importance of proper waste management and operations at the Cooks Sanitary Landfill. The educators were Mr. Shaka Francis, Mr. Marc Southwell, Mr. Andey Euzebe and Ms. Theolinda Charles. The students and teachers had an opportunity to view the authority's video documentaries on past, present and future plans of the authority.

The training sessions were delivered by a four (4) member team from the Authority. The team was comprised of Mr. Shaka Francis (highlighting the persistent pollutants), Mr. Marc Southwell (highlighting landfill operations), Mr. Andey Euzebe (highlighting the 3 R policy) and Ms Theolinda Charles (highlighting the existing communication channels).

With the pending close of the schools for the summer vacation, the Authority will be continuing its education programmes within the summer camps and summer schools for the period.
