Barbuda Local Council and National Solid Waste Management Authority Joint Cleanup Campaign
The sister island of Barbuda was recently the recipient of a 3 day bulk waste cleanup campaign jointly spearheaded by the National Solid Waste Management Authority in conjunction with the Barbuda Local Council. The exercise extended from Friday the 16th to Sunday 18th May 2008.
As a contribution to the initiative, the Authority donated garbage bags, gloves and dust masks. A 7 member delegation of the Authority's workforce was also assigned to the cleanup activity. The team included the Operations Manager, Shaka Francis; The Environmental Assistant, Theolinda Charles; Heavy duty Operators, Malcolm Tweed and Oslyn Floyd; and Loaders Clifton Samuel and Jeraldo Knight.
The success of the cleanup activity was ensured through the collaborative efforts of the Barbuda Local Council, and more specifically the inputs of Mr. Hartford John, Chairman of the Health Committee of the Council with the assistance of Mr. Clause Burton, Landfill Supervisor.
The cleanup exercise was conceptualized to serve as one of the precursory activity leading up to the operational opening of the Barbuda's Sanitary Landfill. Other activities leading up to the inaugural use of the Plantation Sanitary Landfill will include training attachments and staff exchanges between both facilities, training workshops, stakeholder meetings in Barbuda and the Inauguration Ceremony to be held in Barbuda on May 29th 2008.
